Impacts of Social Contacts on Depression of Retirement Facility Residents

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to present basic materials to promote psychological health of the older residents in welfare facilities, by analyzing impacts of social contacts on depression level. The subjects of 116 male and female old people living in 5 charge free residental homes for the aged in Seoul and Kyunggi area were interviewed for social contacts and self-rated depression scale. In this study, it is found that ;
1) The more social contacts they have, the lower depression they have. Residents having social contact with outsiders such as their children, relatives, and friends have lower depression than others.
2) Those who feel themselves receiving social support have lower depression than others.
3) Overall in this study, contact with friends have more positive effects on depression than children or relatives do. Especially, residents who intentionally go out and have social contacts with friends have the lowest level of depression.
